Why sell books like this? In fact, why deliberately avoid traditional publishers and sell exclusively over the internet from this site, as we do? What's wrong with Madison Avenue? I can't improve on Professor James Cantrell. In a review in the Texas Mercury, Professor Cantrell explains as follows:

A decade or so ago, it was something of a game for aspiring novelists and a few graduate students to send to major trade publishers as their own work typescripts that were opening chapters of books that had been written long before and had earned various accolades. As even the average clod who works as an assistant to an editor for a major publishing house might faintly recognize titles of esteemed books, the old books sent as new and in need of publishers were always titled anew. The game was to show how utterly closed and imbecilic the contemporary world of book publishing had become.

Unlike the literary journals that have published plagiarized fiction and poetry amidst the “original” clichéd leftist claptrap that is produced like sliced white bread by the Creative Writing programs, none of the major book publishers offered a new contract for a novel published decades earlier. That, however, is but half the game. The other half, the more important half, is to see if any of the cultural boobs/leftist political hacks sitting as gatekeepers for contemporary publishing houses could recognize literary merit from the past rather than desiring only endless variations of Modern and Postmodern Leftism and faddishness.

Apparently none could, for no contracts were offered. Those who sent already published books did so primarily to verify that unless the sender had important connections, his submission would not be read, certainly beyond a first paragraph, perhaps two. The assistant editor, invariably a young and culturally ignorant recent graduate of some college that confuses outrageous tuition with quality of education (think Jonah Goldberg), would read a line or two and toss the submission into a rejection pile. Scribner’s even rejected out of hand The Yearling, which had won a Pulitzer Prize when published by Charles Scribner’s Sons some half century earlier.

The previous discussion has been a set-up for this statement: Unless you write that which soothes leftist (and/or neo-conservative) fears and/or supports leftist (and/or neo-conservative) hatreds and preconceptions, you will not find a publisher, regardless of whether you write fiction or non-fiction. The few exceptions are those who have powerful connections or status: the immensely wealthy and their close friends (like Taki and Scott McConnell and their circle), the nearing retirement professors (like Clyde Wilson), those who meet at least one Affirmative Action quota (like Walter Williams), or those who meet the unofficial quota of Jewishness (like Paul Gottfried). Even so, I assert that if that trio of academics were all thirty-five-year-old new Ph.D.s known from their dissertations to believe what they believe as sexagenarians, the only one who today would have any long shot at getting hired and tenured by a university and published by a “mainstream” press would be Williams (due to Affirmative Action and his discipline).

That is true because leftists, and to a lesser but growing degree Jewish neo-conservatives, absolutely control contemporary publishing, magazines and university presses every bit as much as trade presses, and they see their mission as literary gatekeepers not primarily as searchers for brilliant, challenging, truth-revealing writing but as excluding promoters of their own basic cultural, moral, political, religious, and social views. Like Cromwellians, French Revolutionaries, Marxists, and Nazis, our contemporary multicultural leftists (and only slightly less so our Jewish neo-conservatives) are driven to silence all opposition by any means necessary—usually while praising themselves for promoting free speech and open exchange of ideas.

That being the case, if in your writing you fail to walk a line acceptable to leftists (and/or Jewish neo-conservatives) you must accept that for your work to be read you will need to place it on the internet or to self-publish in book or magazine form. Frank Conner has chosen the latter. The South Under Siege 1830-2000: A History of the Relations Between the North and the South is exactly the kind of book that must be self-published today because it delves at the heart of the American theater of the Culture War. And its focus helps demonstrate that today’s neo-conservatives, like their Lincoln era Yankee Imperial Conservative forebears, are on the leftist side of most of the major battles: they are virulently anti-Southern.

Conner opens the book with a quote from Milan Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting that sums up the leftist tactic in the Culture War:

"The first step in liquidating a people is to erase its memory. Destroy its books, its culture, its history. Then you have somebody write new books, manufacture a new culture, invent a new history. Before long the nation will begin to forget what it is and what it was."

Remember that author Kundera knows what he is talking about. He is writing from and about a Communist country, his native Czechoslovakia. The only thing I would add to Professor Cantrell's brilliant analysis is the fact that agents, too, act as literary gatekeepers for the publishers, weeding out whatever fails to conform to the totalitarian strictures Professor Cantrell sets forth. With some exceptions, the agents to whom I have sent proposals over the years turned out to be female vacuum heads or feminoid wreckers. One of the exceptions was a gigolo who specializes in living off women. A couple spitefully refused to return manuscripts although I had sent the requisite postage for the purpose. You know who you are.

The billionaire totalitarian Socialist conspirators who rule us recognized long ago that they could not conquer a nation as advanced as ours in a military confrontation. So, Antonio Gramsci, founder of the Italian Communist Party, reversed traditional Socialist strategy, in which Socialist military conquest came first, as in Russia, followed by destruction of the target culture.

Russia was the first target of the world government conspirators. Wall Street and Washington sent money and manpower to destroy it. The Socialists seized power in Russia and then destroyed Russian culture.

Under Gramsci's revised strategy, the Socialist scheme to destroy America would begin with the destruction of our culture, and would end when our free institutions, deprived of the foundation that alone makes them possible, collapse like "overripe fruit" into totalitarian hands.

Consider that cultural conquest is often much more cataclysmic and irrevocable than military defeat. Nations can recover from military defeat, just as a patient can recover from a debilitating illness. Japan has done so. Germany has done so--twice!

But a nation that forgets "what it is and what it was," in Kundera's telling phrases, is tantamount to a pathetic Alzheimer's victim. He doesn't know who he is; only the plastic loop on his wrist does. Such a nation often disappears from history like the Ten Tribes and the Assyrians. If you don't know who you are, you are no one.

That is what is happening here. Our culture is being destroyed in preparation for conquest. Our culture is being replaced by something totally alien. That is why every public manifestation of Christianity is besieged, why every public figure who complains or even misspeaks is savagely rebuked, from Atlanta pitcher John Rocker to former Speaker of the House Trent Lott, why government schools now teach Islam in the name of "toleration," why Marilyn Monroe has replaced George Washington, why the schools teach toleration for the overripe fruit into whose hands we are falling like overripe fruit, why--in the name of a "war on terror" as phony as the "war on drugs--the "Patriot" Acts are eradicating the liberties and customs our culture has taken centuries to mature; liberties that can be destroyed overnight. And so on.

The totalitarian process by now is very far along. The billionaire totalitarian Socialist conspirators who rule us—and who are working with satanic energy to pervert our republic into an empire that controls everything on earth—have by now concentrated in their hands such control of the crucial means of communication in this country that the only remaining “free press” is quite literally what you are reading now: the internet.

Yes, we know all about talk radio and cable news, the "vast right-wing conspiracy" concocted by Hillaroid, the nation's leading cause of proctologic discomfort. Talk radio has become the Democrats' favorite kept enemy, which has degenerated into nothing more than a zombified mouthpiece for the Bush Administration's dreams of empire. For instance, to spend a few minutes with a couple of typically well-paid federal bureaucrats whose ignorance and collectivism perfectly complement their belligerence take a gawk at O'Reilly and Hannity.

This is not the right place to tell you about the all the media projects the totalitarians have "spiked"—killed—but they are legion. What was the last movie you saw about U.S. military personnel in the Soviet gulag, about the Chinese Communist war on Christianity, about the horror of the so-called “gay” life, about what really happens inside an abortuary, about women defending themselves with guns, about the destructive effects of unlimited immigration, about the totalitarian effect of total government and on and on and on?

All of that and much more like it is why no traditional house has ever published your obedient servant's works. You will see a typical example elsewhere on this site, in which a major New York publisher rejected The Highest Virtue, a love story that later won staggering reviews from the Los Angeles Times and the West Coast Review of Books, etc.

And that is precisely why these novels must be published and read--because they are literary antidotes to the same cultural nihilism that preceded the so-called Russian "Revolution." Because they help resuscitate the culture that alone preserves our institutions and traditions. Because they protect the reader from the subversive forces trying to destroy them. Without these novels and many more like them, the American idea--and it is an idea, not a race, a genealogy or people--will die.

That idea is based on Christianity. Without Christianity, the American idea--Americanism--is inconceivable and impossible. That is why the power-lusters so implacably oppose it. Do you want to teach witchcraft or Islam in "our" schools? The federally financed administrators who run those schools see no problem. They don't advocate witchcraft or Islam; they merely realize that there's no such thing as the former and, with regard to the latter, Muhammad conquered but he lost.

Jesus lost but He conquered. He's the real thing, the one they are afraid of. Stangbooks.com is Christian and therefore heterosexual, intensely patriotic and therefore in favor of national independence, pro-military but anti-empire, against world government and therefore against the UN, for strong women, against weak men, for small government and big individuals, for education at home and against government schools, for big, strong families and mothers who want to stay at home, against the satanic Humanist religion, against government monopolies in business, against Socialism for the rich and the poverty pimps.

If you favor the opposite of these things, you probably got on the wrong bus—unless you are curious to see how normal people live—and probably wouldn’t enjoy our books and comments.
