Condoleezza Rice Confirmed by Senate Panel

After a day and a half of grilling by Democratic senators, Dr. Condoleezza Rice has been confirmed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The vote was not unanimous, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and failed presidential candidate Senator John Kerry (D-MA) voted no. Dr. Rice's nomination now goes to the full senate where she is expected to confirmed on Thursday.

She will then be the 66th person sworn in as the nation's Secretary of State.

The hearings were not without a bit of controversy as Sen. Boxer called Dr. Rice a liar, and berated her on several occasions with what appeared to be a script from Fahrenheit 911. Boxer swayed no other Senators to follow her lead and not only appears comfortable but seems to relish her new role as 'the Michael Moore senator.'

Sen. Joe Biden took a clear shot at Donald Rumsfeld as he closed on Tuesday advising Dr. Rice, "For gosh sakes, don't listen Rumsfeld--he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about." Though it's hard to tell when to take Mr. Biden seriously--as he appears to just love the sound of his own voice.

Failed presidential candidate John Kerry just looked sad and defeated. He had nothing to lose by voting no and it will be interesting to see if he shows up for Senate votes this year. His mission may indeed be as an obstructionist.
