Hello - my name is Mark La Palme my wife Tammy and I started
taking in homeless people in august of 99 into our home. Since then we have taken in over 70 people ages 1 day to 53 years old - singles and families.

GOD has allowed us to have a 3600 square foot house in which we built 7 bedrooms in our basement, costing approximately $4000.00 - we have private rooms for them with doors each room having a bed with sheets and blankets, dresser, chair, lamps and the down stairs has a living area. It is a very homey atmosphere and not clinical. Out of the 70 that we have had stay, only 3 so far were unsuccessful. All of the others have homes and jobs -
praise GOD.

People get to stay with us for up to 3 months free. We house,
feed, cloth and even let them move out with their furniture in their rooms - bed, dresser, lamps - and we give them couches, chairs, tables, and kitchen utensils.

We have found that most homeless folks have no license to drive
so we provide them with free transportation. Until we can get them their license, we drive them to work - no matter what the hour - and pick them up.

In October of 2000, after doing this for over 1 year, we have
been charged by Planning and Zoning for violating "r-1 zoning", and have been charged separately (my wife and I) with fines of $1000.00 per day per occurrence of over 3 non-blood relatives in my home.Today that total is well over $100,000.00.

We fluctuate between having 1 to at most 12 people at any one
time. We have 5 ( 8 by 10) and 2 (10 by 12 ) family rooms.We have installed fire alarms in line in each room as well as fire extinguishers the basement floor is completley under ground except for 1 side which has 2 doors for exits as well as the stairway door. Crime in our neighborhood has not increased .01%
and nothing but good has come out of this with the people we
have had the privilege of sharing our home with.

It is my understanding after talking with several shelters that
they tend to ask people to get up at 5 or 6 am and them ask them to leave at 7 am to wander the streets until lunch or some 5 pm. They're given bus tickets and sent on their way.

We on the other hand love them and make them part of our familly with us staying in touch with many of our former residents. We have at least 4 people available to drive them around we play games ie darts, bible trivia,monopoly,playstation and so on. They are encouraged to get their license as well as get a job - also being good stuards with what GOD has given them.

There are no shelters in the immediate area, the hope center in
lexington being 45 miles away and louisville being 90.We offer at no cost to the city what apparently is a need in the community - a viable alternative to homeless centers.

We go to court in Boyle County on January 17th 2001 at 9am..
Folks, we live in $150,000.00 home and 1 month ago it was condemned by the building inspector, because each room doesn't have a separate door to the out side; keep in mind that the walls are concrete and so are the floors.

Please help us if you can in our plight to help those of us who
for some reason or another have found themselves in need of assistance. At this time we are unrepresented in court because we give every dime we have to helping those in need.
