Bush Faces Battle on Social Security
President Bush at an economic conference in December, 2004
A USA Today poll shows that a majority of Americans over 50 think Bush’s Social Security plans are a “bad idea” by a 63% to 33% margin. By a margin of 55% to 42%, Americans under 30 call it a “good idea.” What’s troubling many Republicans is that the age group most opposed to privatization are the people they’re depending on in the 2006 mid-term elections. Among younger voters the White House fear-based campaign — “the current system is heading for an iceberg” — seems to be having an effect. The poll shows, “Nearly two-thirds of those under 30 years old say they don’t think Social Security will be able to pay them any benefit when they stop working.”
