A research study conducted by Pew Internet and American Life Project suggested that 2004 was the year of blogs, as readership percentage surged passed expectations.
The report confirmed that there was a 58 percent readership surge to blogs in 2004 with 27 percent, or 32 million, of Internet users reported reading blogs regularly. Out of the 27 percent readers, 12 percent, or 3.84 million, confirmed posting comments on the blogs they regularly visited.
Interestingly enough, the adult percentage of blogs readers and writers has grown at a rather successful rate. According to the research, seven percent, or eight million, adults admitted to creating a blog last year.
The study also found that much of the interest of blogs generated from last year’s United States Presidential Elections and also said that about nine percent of Internet users read political blogs throughout the election time period.
The research also found that XML and RSS Feeds are getting popular; as five percent of Internet users use numerous aggregators to quickly read news reports. Please click here for CoolTechZone’s RSS Feed.
Blogs generated so much interest and was such a common term that many Internet users were confused about its definitive definition, which led Merrian-Webster to include the word "Blog" in its online edition. The dictionary firm also chose "Blog" as word of the year, 2004. According to the study, 38 percent Internet users were unaware of blog’s definition.
The study also found that there are more blog readers than there are blog writers, obviously. Blog readers are commonly males in their "young" years, but in 2004, various minority groups, women and older males added to the popularity.
On the other hand, blog writers are young males with broadband Internet connection. These males average out at $50,000 per year (42 percent), income wise, and are more experienced Internet users. These users account for 57 percent of the blog creating community.
