Saddam Could Call CIA in His Defence
LONDON, Jul 2 (IPS) - Evidence offered by a top CIA man could confirm the testimony given by Saddam Hussein at the opening of his trial in Baghdad Thursday that he knew of the Halabja massacre only from the newspapers.
Several Reasons Why Saddam Hussein Invaded Kuwait
The Iraqi government had also accused the Kuwaitis of stealing 2.5 billion barrels of oil from its Rumaila oil fields by sliding drills into Iraqi oil pipelines. They had also accused Kuwait of exceeding OPEC oil production which had dropped the price of oil from $20 a barrel to $13 a barrel in the first six months of 1990. This meant 1 billion dollars less for Iraq everytime that price of an oil barrel went down by a dollar. Saddam said he would stop them from continuing aggressive action:"The oil quota violators have stabbed Iraq with poison dagger. Iraqis will not forget the saying that cutting necks is better than cutting means of living. O'God almighty, be witness that we have warned them".1 His foreign minister Tariq Aziz later said in a letter to the Arab league that Kuwait is "systematically, deliberately and continuously" harming Iraq by encroaching on its territory, stealing oil, and destroying its economy.1 "Such behaviour amounts to military aggression".1 These were just signs of the Desert Storm to come.
Saddam's defiance in the dock
HE went into custody like a lamb after he was pulled from a hole in the ground last December, but yesterday Saddam Hussein roared back to life in a Baghdad courtroom to ridicule the war crime charges laid against him.
Saddam Suddenly Looks Innocent
Memo To: Attorney General John Ashcroft
From: Jude Wanniski
Re: Why is He Being Held at All?
Wanniski: Free Saddam!
The godfather of supply-side economics remains an unreconstructed Saddamophile.

When last Chatterbox looked in on Jude Wanniski, high priest of supply-side economics, Wanniski was taking a well-deserved victory lap for having stated, prior to the war, that Saddam didn't have any chemical or biological weapons. The moral high ground was unfamiliar to Wanniski, at least on this issue, because previously he'd argued, against a mountain of meticulous documentation to the contrary, that Saddam Hussein never gassed the Kurds. For a brief moment, one could shed the memory of Wanniski as genocide-denier and call him prescient.
But apparently the air up on that moral and factual summit was too thin for him. Wanniski has now reverted to his more accustomed role as crank with a truly appalling claim (in a letter to Attorney General John Ashcroft) that Saddam Hussein "suddenly looks innocent."
Saddam, Wanniski argues, did not harbor weapons that threatened other nations and did not have meaningful ties to al-Qaida. So far, so good. But then Wanniski slips the surly bonds of earth to argue that Saddam may not have had the vaguest clue about the atrocities being committed in his name. If Bush didn't know about Abu Ghraib, isn't it possible that Saddam didn't know about what his brownshirts were up to?
THE TRUTH ABOUT SADDAM HUSSEIN
In 1991 the first Bush administration betrayed the Iraqi people. US president George Bush publicly exhorted the Iraqi's to revolt against Hussein after the first Gulf War. When they took his advice and did, they got absolutely NO SUPPORT from Washington. Hussein then killed tens of thousands of those who defied him. AND HE DID IT WITH THE WEAPONS THE U.S. GAVE HIM IN THE 1980's. When the Kuwaiti's slant drilled under Iraq in 1990 to steal Iraqi oil, Hussein warned them to stop, or there would be war. They didn't and Hussein got the green light from Washington to go ahead with the war.

Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Saddam?
I have a confession to make: I’m not afraid of Saddam Hussein. Not a bit. I have absolutely no fear that the man is going to come and get me or that he is going to spray biological or chemical weapons on me or that he will send someone to do the dirty deed for him. I don’t even fear the possibility that Saddam will nuke me.
