(This is a copy of a letter I am told was flown back to Thailand and hand delivered to Phra Mettanando, the HARVARD educated monk who protested Johnathan Doody's innocence and raised the $700,000 in Thailand for the Dershowitz brothers to handle Doody's murder appeal. Because the Dershowitz brothers did not have licenses to practice law in Arizona they retained a local attorney --- Peter Baukin --- the same attorney who had misshandled Jonathan Doody's original murder trial! I asked Mettanando if he had received the letter in March 1996 --- the day of the final oral arguments in Doody's appeal for a new trial. This took place in the Phoenix Appellate Court. I gave him another copy and a business card. He said he would respond, but he did not.
I last saw him getting into Defence Attorney Peter Baulkin's new MERCEDES BENZ with Allen Dershowitz. Earlier, when I asked Allen Dershowitz if he had seen the GRAPEVINE series he withdrew without answering. B.Q. 6-5-96 )
Honorable Phra Mettanando,
I know the courage it takes to examine the murders committed at Wat Promkunaram temple. I salute the Divinity within you.
As you read this, the appeal of Jonathan Doody is preceding into its last month. Like with the original trial, without outside intervention there is little hope of Jonathan being granted another trial. In order that justice may have a chance, I am writing a book which explains to the people of Thailand and the United States the crimes associated with the Wat Promkunaram murders. The first chapter which examines the media coverage of these events is enclosed. This material is not copyrighted so that you may copy and distribute the text, audio tapes and floppy discs to whoever you wish. There are seven other chapters which are almost ready. Perhaps you know of some way I can publish this in Thailand.
Lamthong Sudthisa-ard, who is back in Thailand, is of special interest to us. It seems possible that Ambassador Birabhongue Karemsri remembered Lamthong from the days Lamthong was President of the Los Angles Thai Association when they met two days after the murders. Do you know of occasions when these two prominent Thais may have met?
The most distressing part of the appeal is the obvious fact that the defence team is deliberately acting to incriminate their client. According to Jonathan Doody, his mother, his father and his brother, Jonathan was at home with his mother and brother at the time of the murders. According to Jonathan's defence attorneys Jonathan was at the crime scene at the time of the murders. I interpret this as utter moral depravity.
At the time of the murders I was covering three trials in the Federal District Court in Phoenix that involved tons at a time narcotics trafficking and the CIA or the Department of Defence. Many unusual aspects of the temple murders are consistent with the DOD drug trafficking activity in Arizona that I have been writing about since 1987.
The Office of Special Investigations of the Strategic Air Command has been shown to be even more deeply involved than we indicated in our last article. Since then we learned that;
1) Steve McGibbons, the OSI intelligence officer who escorted Jonathan to the OSI office the night the .22 caliber rifle was confiscated, was one of the AIR FORCE's top forensic experts. He was flown in from another base specifically to investigate the temple murders.
2) McGibbons was present on the 21st of August (just 10 days after the murders) when Doody and his friends were stopped on LUKE Air Base with the rifle.
3) Another OSI officer, Hovis Chasteen, was also flown in to LUKE Air Base (because of his "vast experience with Thai people") specifically to work on the "mini task force" that had been assembled there. The U.S. military had absolutely no jurisdiction to do any of this! Chasteen's statement is attached.
4) The media told the public that law enforcement was taken by surprise to find that the Caratachea rifle was the murder weapon, yet McGibbons testified that OSI had Doody's apartment "under surveillance" the day the rifle was confiscated.
The story of the U.S. government's major involvement in the world's heroin trade begins with General Edward Lansdale, the covert action specialist who generated the Vietnam war. A great number of the covert action principals from the Golden Triangle turned up in Phoenix facilitating massive narcotics trafficking. Surely Asians will find these matters of special interest. I am especially suited to tell this story. I assembled a speakers bureau to provide colleges and universities with access to journalists who would otherwise be censored by the major media. This included the greatest collection of CIA critics the world has ever known. Several profiles of these speakers are included.
If there is any deep meaning in the ghastly murders in the temple surely it must lie in the obvious irony that Arizona may be in more need of the teachings of the Buddha than any place on this earth. This state is the most organized crime infested. It is an environment of total corruption. Arizona imprisons a greater percentage of its citizens than anywhere else in the world. Maricopa county trafficks more illegal narcotics than any county in the U.S. exceeded only by Browder county in Florida. It is the most inequitably taxed county in the U.S. with the county where Tucson is located being the next. Only two states of our 50 spends less for the mentally ill and socially needy. This is where material opulence and abject poverty meet face to face. It is the moral bad lands of America if not the world.
