Maricopa County Sheriffs Office Supplimental Report
Occurence Date: August 10, 1991
DR#: 91 16695
Occurence Location: 17212 West Maryland
Occurence Type: Homicide
Victim: Matthew Miller, et al possession of the .22 Marlin (Murder Weapon).
Chasteen said he was assigned to assist in the Temple Murder Investigation on or about September 8,1991. He was flown to Luke Air Force Base due to his background with Thai people. His job was to review records regarding military personnel that may have Thai dependents or associations.
On September 10, 1991 Chasteen assisted Det. R. Sinsabaugh and agent Steve Mc Gibbon in contacting Rolando Caratchea. Chasteen thought that Sinsabaugh may have picked Caratchea up at his work place and transported him to the Sun Eagle Apts where he was residing. Sinsabaugh exited Caratchea's apartment with a .22 Marlin rifle. After the recovery of the weapon Chasteen thought that Caratchea and/or Jonathan Doody were taken to the O.S.I. office to be interviewed.
Chasteen said that once Sinsabaugh recovered the rifle he didn't want to transport it in the back of his pickup, so the weapon was given to him (Chasteen) to transport to the office. Chasteen said he took the weapon to the O.S.I. briefing room where he laid it down. Chasteen said the weapon was left unattended in the briefing room, although the area is controlled or designated limited access.
Chasteen said this means that other O.S.I. agents and police officers may have access, but the general pubic is not permitted.
After leaving the weapon in the briefing room Chasteen assumed that Sinsabaugh had picked it up. This was the last time he saw the rifle in question.
Chasteen described the rifle as being a .22 marlin bolt action rifle. He further stated that he made no marking, nor did he note any serial numbers on the weapon.
