(Well, they didn't get my words exactly correct - I said "progressive waves of explosions occurring throughout the towers and underground explosions that breached the vertical integrity of the core columns - and they left out a great deal of what else I actually said, but this is still not too bad...:-))

Protestors appeared on the sidelines of the tribute to those killed at the World Trade Centre in New York in September, 2001. Even as tearful families laid flowers at Ground Zero and the names of the some 3 000 victims were read out loud, a small group demonstrated at the fringes calling on New Yorkers to take a closer look at the tragedy.

"They're tugging at your heartstrings because they don't want you to think!" urged Lisa Giuliani, of Wing TV - an alternative media organisation. "You're grieving, but you have to think. Their version of what happened has been disproved!"

While one distraught woman, who had lost a loved one when the buildings collapsed, lashed out - "Do this somewhere else, anywhere else!" - most of those passing the demonstrations on their way to the ceremony were politely curious. The protestors gathered around Giuliani as she traced the New York skyline with her hand, demonstrating the trajectory at which the buildings had fallen. She says the government's version of events defy laws of physics.

She says the building was laced with explosives at the ground floor and was detonated in order to unite the nation behind George W Bush, the US president. Steven Wavra, a Navy veteran passing by agreed with her. "I'm going to legally change my name to Benedict Arnold in protest against what this administration is doing," he said. Benedict Arnold was an American general who famously switched sides during the American Revolutionary War.

Wavra says the Bush administrations is launching a war on civil rights. Allen Road, another protestor, says they're taking the demonstrations to the United Nations headquarters in New York. "We want the world to pressure this administration," he said. Road has been outside Ground Zero every weekend, urging visitors too examine the holes in the official telling of the 9/11 story.

The city observed four moments of silence in tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy. The silence was observed at the times that each plane crashed into the towers, and at the times that each tower collapsed
