HEADLINE: Slay suspect's bizarre tales no barrier to crossing border
BYLINE: By J.M. Lawrence

A deranged man with a blood-splattered chainsaw in his backpack was allowed to cross the Canadian border even after telling U.S. Customs officials he was a Marine Corps sergeant who worked for President Bush, according to federal court documents.

Wearing a green flak jacket, Gregory Despres, 22, who is a U.S. citizen, also claimed he had a helicopter waiting for him. Customs officials say they had no legal means to stop him at 6:30 a.m. on April 25 from crossing into Calais, Maine.

Later that day, a police bulletin went out from Canada charging Despres with decapitating a 74-year-old country singer and his wife two days earlier in Minto, New Brunswick, over a dispute with the singer's grandson. Despres was their neighbor.

Court documents and police reports obtained yesterday reveal more details about the alleged killer's strange odyssey, culiminating in his arrest April 27 in Mattapoisett.

Dispatcher Carol Flynn noticed the bulletin along with a partial report of Despres' Massachusetts driver's license number. She played with the number, typing in random extra digits, until she discovered something startling: Despres had a prior Mattapoisett address.

Patrolman Andrew Murray was dispatched to find the suspect. About 11:30 p.m., he saw Despres, who had a mohawk, dragging a backpack on wheels down Route 6.

``He stated he was all set and just walking to work,'' Murray said in a report. Despres claimed he worked at a local marina.

Murray called for backup and Despres was arrested. He told police he ``was wanted in Russia for a homicide and stated that he is to serve a 10-year sentence.'' Despres claimed he spent a week in Russia in 2001 when he was 18.

Despres is currently in federal custody. He faces an extradition hearing July 21 before a federal magistrate in Boston.

He is charged with killing Fred Fulton and leaving his head in a pillowcase under a kitchen table.
