FAN Bulletin #299: URGENT: Support the ELEVEN EPA Unions call to
Congress.

August 22, 2005.

Dear All,

Here again are the URLs to the dramatic moves by the 11 EPA unions
in their effort to halt fluoridation nationwide.

1) Their press release: <http://nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/Press%
20Release.%20Fluoride.htm>

2) Their letter to EPA director Stephen Johnson
http://nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/flouride.unions.epa.a.2005.htm

3) Their letter to key members of Congress
http://nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/fluroride%20.unions.congress.htm

We need all the support we can get for this magnificent EPA Union
initiative. Here are some of the things you can do:

1) Sign the online POWA petition at
http://petition.powalliance.org/index.html

2) Write your own personal letter to your two US Senators and your
US House Representative. Your letter can be as short as:

Dear Senator X,

As one of your constituents I urge you to support the over 7000
professionals working at the US EPA who are calling for a
Congressional hearing on fluoridation and an immediate halt to this
practice nationwide. Their letter can be accessed at
http://nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/Press%20Release.%20Fluoride.htm.

( This next paragraph is optional, but important and will save you
some time, if you don't think it is going to upset your Rep. too
much!)

Please don't insult my intelligence by telling me how many US
agencies endorse this practice -that is part of the problem!

We need an objective assessment with government proponents
testifying under oath. Please let me know what steps you are willing
to take to get this matter resolved.

Sincerely

Their addresses:

Longer sample letters are provided below.

3) After a week follow up with a phone call. You can reach them by
calling the Capitol switchboard at 1-202-224-3121 and asking for
them by name.

4) One letter probably won't achieve much - it is your second letter
which engages their response or lack of response which will be the
key. Check with us if there are comments you cannot address.

4) Send us a copy of what you send and their response.

5) Once you have got your feet wet, try to get as many of your
friends and colleagues to do likewise.

6) Give copies to friends, neighbors, co-workers, club members,
etc.. Tell them the importance of sending letters and contacting
their U.S. legislators by mail, fax, e-mail, phone, visit district
or Washington, D. C. office. These legislators must be deluged with
letters, phone calls, etc. .

7) Publicize the 11 EPA Unions' unprecedented action and the life-
threatening osteosarcoma/fluoridation findings, in newspapers,
magazines, newsletters, flyers, radio, TV, etc.

8) Give us feedback - please let us know if you are able to get a
doctor, dentist or PHD to sign on. Send us their names as we will be
circulating lists.

9) If you live in one of the following states please contact your
state representative of the "National Dream Team". If your state is
not there do you want to be our representative -either by yourself
or with one or two other people?

1) ARKANSAS -Crystal Harvey
2) CALIFORNIA - Gene Burke (need others)
3) COLORADO - Pati Caputo
4) FLORIDA -Jo Anne Johnson
5) MARYLAND - Bernie Miltenberger
6) NEW YORK - Eleanor Krinsky, Carol Kopf and the
Connetts.
7) OREGON -Lynne Campbell
8) UTAH - Lorna Rosenstein
9) WASHINGTON - Shirley Jacobson and
Betty Fowler
10) WISCONSIN -Dan Zupon

10) If you get really ambitious you might consider manning (or
womanning!) a table - with friends -outside a supermarket or state
fair or wherever you think would attract the most attention and the
most signees. Remember we need two things:

NUMBERS - as many people signing a petition as possible.
PERSONAL LETTERS FROM CONSTITUENTS -this is really makes the
difference in our US Representative minds - well considered lettrs
from their consituents.

11) Keep your eyes opne for our updates as more and more people from
aroudn the country and around the world lend their support to the
ELEVEN US EPA union initiatives.

SAMPLE LETTER (long)

Dear Representative (or Senator) __________________:

I am your constituent and one of countless Americans alarmed by a
widely publicized Harvard University study linking water
fluoridation to increased risk of a frequently fatal bone cancer
(osteosarcoma) in young males - and the ongoing suppression of these
serious findings by the professor overseeing the research. See the
Washington Post (July 13) and Wall Street Journal (July 22) articles
on this at http://www.fluoridealert.org/news/2313.html and
http://fluorideaction.net/news/2323.html

I am writing to request that you support the eleven (11) EPA unions,
representing thousands of scientists and other EPA professionals,
that are now calling for an immediate moratorium on water
fluoridation until a new Congressional investigation of this
controversial procedure has been instigated and completed. The
unions' position is elaborated in a letter to Senator Inouye by
their spokesperson, EPA Senior Scientist, Dr. William Hirzy
(http://nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/fluroride%
20.unions.congress.htm ). Dr. Hirzy can be reached at: 202-885-1780
or by email at:
whirzy@american.edu.

Sixty years of fluoridation has caused widespread and unavoidable
exposure to toxic fluorides through our food and beverage chain -
with no freedom of choice for anyone. The primary chemicals used are
largely untested silicofluorides, which are waste products of the
phosphate fertilizer industry. While most medically advanced nations
have rejected or banned this risky practice long ago due to ethical,
health and environmental concerns, our own population remains at
risk. The fluoridation-osteosarcoma link is of immediate concern
because it is life threatening, but there are many other documented
health issues, including damage to bone, serious fluoride
overexposure in infants (newborn babies who are fed formula made
with fluoridated tap water are getting 100-200 times higher doses of
fluoride than a breast fed baby), lowering of IQ in children,
accumulation in the pineal gland and lowering of thyroid function
(see documentation at http://www.fluorideaction.net/health.)

Although the vast majority of European countries do not fluoridate
their water, tooth decay in European 12 year-olds has declined as
fast, if not faster, than in the US (see
http://www.fluorideaction.net/who-dmft.htm.) This is strong proof
that there is no need to use the water supply to force fluoride on
whole populations. Moreover, numerous reports of a dental crisis in
major US cities that have long practiced fluoridation indicate that
the procedure has failed to achieve its stated goals while
subjecting over 170 million US citizens to the risks and harmful
effects of chronic fluoride exposure.

In 1999, the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) conceded that any dental benefit from fluoride
comes primarily from topical exposure to the surfaces of the teeth.
This fact means ingestion through the water supply is useless and
risky. Since 80% of childhood tooth decay occurs in only 25% of the
child population (primarily children from low socio-economic
backgrounds lacking access to dental care [CDC, 2001]), the many
millions spent on fluoridation promotion, equipment and chemicals
would be better spent on direct dental care for children with the
greatest need and by increasing preventive measures such as improved
nutrition and better oral hygiene education.

Over 60 years of frenetic endorsement and promotion of this practice
by the US Public Health Service, the CDC and the ADA has resulted in
the virtual halt of rational scientific debate on fluoridation in
the US. Using taxpayer dollars and ignoring all recent scientific
evidence of harm, efforts by these agencies to expand fluoridation
through statewide mandates are now accelerating. This should be
halted and Congress should begin examining all scientific evidence
on the risks and benefits of fluoridation through a new
investigation - along with an immediate national moratorium on
fluoridation until the investigation is completed. I urge you to
join with the 11 EPA unions calling for this to begin at the
earliest possible date.

Respectfully yours,
