SADDAM TURNS HIS BACK ON GREENBACKS

Europe's dream of promoting the euro as a competitor
to the U.S. dollar may get a boost from SADDAM HUSSEIN.
Iraq says that from now on, it wants payments for its
oil in euros, despite the fact that the battered
European currency unit, which use to be worth quite
a bit more than $1, has dropped to about 82 cents.
Iraq says it will no longer accept dollars for oil
because it does not want to deal "in currency of the enemy."

The switch to euros would cost the U.N. (U.S.) a small
fortune in accounting paperwork changes. It would also
reduce the interest earnings and reparations payments
that Iraq is making for damage it caused during the Gulf War,
a shortfall the Iraqis would have to make up.

The move hurts Iraq, the U.N. (U.S.) and the countries receiving
reparations. So why is Saddam doing it? Diplomatic
sources say switching to the euro will favor European
suppliers over U.S. ones in competing for Iraqi contracts,
and the p.r. boost that Baghdad would probably get in
Europe would be another plus.

Camp Casey coordinator Ann Wright has issued an appeal. The van that has been used recently to accomodate media interviews is being called out of service and there is now an immediate need for a replacement. Anyone interested in loaning or providing such a van for use by Sheehan should call Wright at 808-741-1141. She explained that this need is somewhat urgent.

The letters were accepted by a young man named Bill Burck who says he is a member of the staff secretary's office. He said it was a pleasure for him to accept these letters to be delivered to George and Laura Bush. Medea Benjamin, who carried one of the three baskets that were delivered, said the group was appealing to "President Bush's better half," because she 's a mother and they thought she would understand and appeal to her husband on their behalf.

The group is planning to shuttle back to camp. It was a very peaceful delivery of letters.

We have reached the checkpoint and the march was mostly uneventful. They are still singing. There's a lot of law enforcement presence here. People are told to slow down on the road here. Nothing's happening right now. Here's the lady with the basketfull of letters. I'll report back in a few minutes.

The latest on Cindy Sheehan's mother: According to camp coordinator Ann Wright, all they knew at the camp was that Cindy's mother suffered a stroke this afternoon. They don't know her condition. Cindy is taking a flight to Los Angeles to be with her and will return as soon as she can. Sheehan's sister, DeDe Miller, went with her.

The march to deliver letters to Laura Bush has begun. The walk is about 1.7 miles in the "hot Texas sun." Marchers are utilizing the road because the ditch was full of media trucks.

I am in front of the marchers taking photographs and notes. The marchers are singing old favorites like "Ain't Gonna Study War No More," and are chanting "Give peace a chance."

Now they are singing "Down By The Riverside," but have altered the words, like this: "Gonna Give These Letters to Laura Bush, Down By The Riverside."

The marchers are carrying a big letter in front of the group that reads:

"Dear Mrs. Bush, we as women of America appeal to you to udnerstand the urgency of our plea.

"We cannot abide the continued loss of precious lives on both sides in Iraq.

"Our plea is simple. Please, read our letters and ask your husband to meet with Cindy Sheehan who represents so many military wives and mothers."

About hundred marchers, plus the media, are in line. It is led by two sheriff's department cars, then the procession, complete with long banners.

Now they are chanting, "Hey Hey, Ho, Ho — the Iraqi war has got to go." Marchers are carrying umbrellas. It has to be close to a hundred degrees, but there is a breeze that helps. The road is hot, though.

It's now 5:42 p.m. I'm with Lt. Sid Franklin who has decided that the group should not march all the way to the checkpoint, because of the heat and safety factors with traffic. A shuttle will be used. The marchers traveled about half-a-mile on foot prior to this decision being made. Lt. Franklin and John Kolinek with the sheriff's department have done a wonderful job, according to camp coordinators.

It's now 5:46 p.m. There's been a change in plans. The marchers decided to walk and not take the shuttle. The officers say they were concerned since the thermometer in the squad car reads 98 degrees and, with the heat index and the heat from the road, they suspect that the actual temperature is about 108 degrees for the marchers.

Cindy Sheehan is en route to an airport to go to Los Angeles to be with her mother, who suffered a stroke this afternoon, it has been reported. The letter walk will still be held. About a hundred of supporters are at the camp right now (more counting the media) as letters are being read.
