Crawford is a town located in western McLennan County, Texas, eighteen miles
west of Waco. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 705,
74 more than in the 1990 census.
The town was incorporated on August 12, 1897.
President George W. Bush's Prairie Chapel Ranch is located just outside the
town.
Geography
Crawford is located at 31°32'4" North, 97°26'38" West (31.534579,
-97.443954)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.4
km˛ (0.9 mi˛), none of which is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 705 people in the town, organized into
260 households and 192 families. The population density is 295.9/km˛
(763.1/mi˛). There are 277 housing units at an average density of 116.3/km˛
(299.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 88.37% White, 4.40% African
American, 0.14% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 5.96%
from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 11.49% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 260 households out of which 41.2% have children under the age of 18
living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% are non-families. 23.8%
of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living
alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and
the average family size is 3.23.
In the town the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 7.7%
from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65
years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there
are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $38,015, and the median
income for a family is $39,732. Males have a median income of $31,765 versus
$19,653 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,421. 6.2% of
the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the
total population, 2.9% of those under the age of 18 and 24.7% of those 65 and
older are living below the poverty line.
