President Bush has nominated Harvard Law graduate John G. Roberts Jr., a federal appeals court judge, to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created earlier this month when Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her retirement. Roberts graduated from Harvard Law School in 1979 and from Harvard College in 1976.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Roberts will be the sixth justice on the current court to attend Harvard Law School. The other alumni justices are Anthony Kennedy '61, Antonin Scalia '60, David Souter '66, Stephen Breyer '64, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who attended HLS from 1956 to 1958 and ultimately received her degree from Columbia Law School. Throughout history, numerous Harvard Law School graduates and faculty members have served on the high court, including Joseph Story, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Louis Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, William Brennan, Harry Blackmun and others.

"John Roberts has devoted his entire professional life to the cause of justice," said Bush during the announcement ceremony at the White House, "and is widely admired for his intellect his sound judgment and his personal decency."

Roberts called it "both an honor and very humbling to be nominated to serve on the Supreme Court." He added that when he argued cases before the court in the past he "always got a lump in my throat whenever I walked up those marble steps."

In 2003, Bush appointed Roberts to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Roberts previously served as the principal deputy solicitor general in the administration of President George H.W. Bush and as a lawyer in the Reagan White House. He has also worked in private practice.

WINOKUR AND DYNCORP

As Federal investigations swirl around Winokur and
other board members, doubt has been raised about
the viability of independent investigation, given
Enron's enormous political clout, Winokur's leading
role in the company that manages information systems
for many of the investigative agencies raises a
special set of concerns.

Winokur owes much of his wealth to his role in
reconstructing Dyncorp, one of the Federal government's
largest private contractors. He is a former Dyncorp
chairman and remains a director of the company. At
present, Dyncorp manages e-mail and information
systems for the Department of Justice, the Securities
and Exchange Commission and the Federal Bureau of
Investigations.

Investigators are reportedly concerned that Dyncorp's
control of agency information systems could compromise
their investigations of Winokur and Enron.

Harvard could face inquiry into Enron links

A group of Harvard students and alumni have called for an
investigation into possible links between an Enron director
on the university's governing corporation and the timely
selling of stock which netted an estimated $50m as the
company's shares declined.

HarvardWatch, which campaigns for more open governance
of the university, admits it has no evidence of insider
trading but is urging the suspension of Herbert "Pug" Winokur
from the seven-member corporation pending the outcome of a
"credible investigation into alleged financial improprieties
regarding the management of the university's endowment".

The university said Mr Winokur, who chairs Enron's finance
committee, was a "valued member" of the Harvard Corporation.
A Harvard alumnus, he has, since 1995, been on the board
of the Harvard Management Company which oversees the
university's $18bn endowment.

US President George W. Bush today announced Justice John G. Roberts Jr. as his pick to fill the Supreme Court void caused by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Roberts is known as a strong conservative, but is nevertheless endorsed by many from both parties. At 50 years of age, if confirmed, he will be the youngest judge on the court, and is expected to be able to serve 30 years or more. He was appointed to the D.C. Court of Appeals in 2003 by the President
