(Disclaimer: For those of you who may not recognize sarcasm when you see it, I'm being perfectly 'sincere.')
It just dawned on me... The new volunteer army of the coerced and bribed. The American Military has been failing to meet its recruitment demands. Many have speculated that this could lead to a draft. However, I don't think that this is going to be the "ingenious" solution.
No, what they are going to do is to grant illegal immigrants 'citizenship' status to serve in the military (like the Romans once did). It'll be an easy sell and can develop arguments for 'bi-partisan' support. (at least in the 'non-partisan' spin of the media and its corporate masters.)
Juan can either be sent back to his former hovel, or can go to bootcamp (with its guarantee of semi-potable drinking water). Juan will have a choice. And Juanita will have the same choice for that matter. 'Merika is an equal opportunity killer, after all, and leads the world in progressive and enlightened thinking. There are a whole lot of Juans and Juanitas who will be willing to go kill a few towel heads for financial opportunity and legal status in 'Merika. (Replace your green card with a gold card! Citizenship sponsored by Visa!) After all, the deforestation of the rainforest and the disenfranchisement of its indigenous people have assured a definite "Northward Migratory Flow." This is quite fortuitous for the Empire!
They could even set up American recruiting stations throughout Mexico. With its Mexican army, 'Merika could go into Iran and Syria, and every other nation that is sitting on oil or a strategic position. ...And why stop there???... They could turn American military recruiting into a private enterprise and go into every other poor country on the planet and get these people !CHEAP! ...Why pay American men and women when you can get foreign labor at 1/10th the price? This could even be the basis for establishing African debt relief. Send 'Merika slaves.. I mean 'indentured servants' to serve in the military for a while (10 years or so), and if they live through it, 'Merika can take some $$$ off the tab.
So relax, all you 'Merikans! GI Juan and GI Juanita are on their way to relieve GI Joe and GI Jane (and at only a fraction of the cost!)
