Drums of Impeachment

A few days ago a fellow Pennsylvanian, Richard Pfaehler, wrote a letter to the
New York Times in which he says Mine is one of the 560,000 signatures on
the petition that John Conyers Jr. presented to the White House on Thursday,
seeking answers to questions about the president's decision to invade Iraq.
While I vigorously oppose our preemptive attack on a nation that was not
threatening our country, my strongest objections center on the collection of
lies that members of the Bush administration used in their successful attempt
to garner Congressional, media and public support for their invasion.
With the revelations stated in the Downing Street minutes we now learn
that the lying wasn't simply a matter of being incorrect because of poor
intelligence, but rather it was knowingly fabricated for the express purpose
of duping the American people into supporting a war that had been anticipated,
planned and supported by this administration long before the tragic events of
9/11.
Who has benefited, and for what?
The conflict we now find our nation mired in was, and continues to be, based
on lies. These lies have created many one-parent families. These lies have
disgraced a nation.
What is more disgraceful than to make untrue statements with the intent to
deceive, and thereby cause the death of even a single individual? There needs
to be an accounting for the losses.
In Capitol Hill Blue, Doug Thompson, makes the point that Slowly, but
steadily, the Downing Street Memo is getting the public attention it deserves
and making the case that President George W. Bush should be removed from
office. He titles his article Time to Impeach a War Criminal.
The Drums of Impeachment are beginning to be heard loud and clear. Impeachment
this time is not about oral sex in the oval office. But lying to the nation to
get us into war, for preventing the disclosure of documents that could have
helped the American people understand the real reasons for going into a
premeditated war, for conniving and deceiving the American people into
accepting an electoral result that was also premeditated and pre-arranged, for
causing the international disgrace of our nation by abusing prisoners and
denying them their fundamental rights to a trial, for causing the death of
tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi people through indiscriminate bombardment
in the midst of an invasion motivated by Greed.
But it will be a major disservice to the American people and our own reality
to just limit the impeachment rationale to the lies of the Iraq war. The Bush
administration and its Greed Machine should also face the music for the
terrible damage they have done economically to our nation. They have certainly
placed our economy in harm's way. Our nation is now beginning to feel the
truth about our economic status.
I, amongst a few others, have been saying for quite sometime that the goal of
the Greed Machine is to turn our nation into a third-world country. The
elitism of the Bush clique and their disdain for working people allows them to
mentally justify the actions that they have taken. The tax cuts for the
super-wealthy and their corresponding Estate Tax cut is a prime example of
their vision. In the process they are destroying the Middle Class and
indirectly opening the doors for the country to be taken over by foreign
enterprises; they are cutting education expenditures, they are throwing people
out into the streets without medical coverage, our environmental laws of
yesteryears are being modified to satisfy corporations. Welcome Third World
Modus Vivendi!
Part of this new Modus Vivendi is the curtailment of our political freedoms.
The Homeland Security Act is more important for its ability to keep tabs on
the opposition than to protect the nation from terrorist attacks. We have all
seen our press, with a few exceptions, become emasculated and unable to
service the nation. The Greed Machine continues in its march towards total
banishment of independent thought. Patricia Harrison, former Co-Chair of the
Republican National Committee, has been chosen to head National Public
Broadcasting. This is a major step in sanitizing the news. As long as NPR was
telling the truth, the other stations were compelled to present at least a
variant of it. As soon as NPR is silenced then the other can devote their
energies to present to the American people - the world according to the Greed
Machine.
Interviews with Dick Cheney telling us the insurgency in Iraq is in its last
throes, interviews with Condi Rice talking about our new diplomatic
achievements, and Rumsfeld telling us about our major successes in Iraq! What
a wonderful world of make-believe! Our soldiers and their families will be
left to fend for themselves with their pain. There will be no need to bother
the nation about their losses. Economic problems will become a personal
matter. Everybody else is doing fine. Face it, they will say, is just that you
and those around you are a bunch of losers!
Impeaching Bush and his clique is a step towards saving the nation. We cannot
pretend anymore that electing somebody else will save us. Two elections, two
steals. 2008 is three years from now. In less than nine months Bush went from
the highest budget surplus in our history to the highest deficit. In the last
few months, employees of solid companies have been losing their pensions;
major American corporations are being taken over by foreign enterprises, and
hundred of thousands more keep losing good paying jobs. Bush's America is a
nightmare.
Let's start banging the Drums of Impeachment!
