These are young men who are forced to choose whether or not to risk death for the Empire.

They become criminals by saying "no".

They are young and impressionable -- and forced into what is perhaps the first principled decision of their life.

They are young, and to a great degree, less vested as slaves. They retain visions of greatness lost and forgotten to the old.

Forced to abandon their homes, they will not be giving up wealth for the cause so much as being forced into the life of resistance by the Slaveholders themselves.

If Canada is not allowed as a refuge as in the past, they will be forced to go underground. What better place than the hills?
