Hard to choose-'Dave' is really a 'feel good' movie about a do-gooder who
gets to do good! A lot like the famous Mr. Smith. 'Dick' is about Watergate.
It is hilarious! Really! 'Bullworth' is another good one, but darker,
chiller, closer to the bone. Finally JFK (al;though Stone's 'Nixon' is quite
interestingly sympathetic) A lot of those things really happened. I have an
excellent study on the assassination, footnoted to a fault, and a lot of
the things in the movie are mentioned and confirmed.

My favorite political movie is Frank
Capra's "Meet John Doe," 1941. Capra
tested the film in different areas of the
US with four different endings to
determine which one to keep. In one,
John Willoughby (Gary Cooper) commits
suicide. In another, Ann Mitchell
(Barbara Stanwick) persuades him not
to leap from City Hall.
Capra filmed a fifth and final ending in
which Mitchell talks some sense into
Willoughby and then faints into his
arms. Then James Gleason turns
to neo-fascist capitalist demogague
Edward Arnold, who has been using
John Doe as a cover for his secret
plans to enslave America and snaps,
"Tell that to the people, Mr. Norton."
Steeple bells ring...fade to black.
Ah, if only real life were that simple.
