According to media hype, the late Pope John Paul II and other Catholic Church leaders have apologized for the Vatican's role in the Holocaust. But the Vatican's so-called apologies, including statements by Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, completely distort history. They claim the Catholic Church was a) innocent of aiding the Nazis and b) that Nazism was a Godless ideology that targeted the Church. A picture essay posted at Emperor's Clothes provides evidence that these claims are, quite simply, lies.

Emperor's Clothes is publishing a series on media glorification of the Vatican, which peaked with coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II. The series covers:

* the wars in Yugoslavia, particularly the secession of Croatia, which Yugoslav Catholic Bishops had endorsed, and the secessionist movement in Kosovo;

* the Church's relationship to the Jewish people in general and the Holocaust in particular in light of the changes made by Vatican II;

* and the murder of Church officials by death squads in El Salvador.

April is the 60th anniversary of the prisoner revolt at Jasenovac, the Croatian death camp where hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Roma, and anti-Fascists were murdered by the Croatian Ustashe, one of Hitler's favorite groups, during World War II. "Witness to Jasenovac Hell," written by Ilija Ivanovic, a survivor of the rebellion at Jasenovac, vividly describes the camp and the rebellion.
