Fighting the Odds – The Minute Man Project

The battle lines are drawn in the sand, literally. The Minuteman Project, the brainchild of Jim Gilchrist, a Vietnam veteran, started an Internet crusade asking volunteers to come to Arizona and help patrol the border. He plans to have volunteers patrol a 20-mile stretch of the border near the town of Naco, Arizona during the month of April to send a message to the government that the borders can be closed to illegal immigration.

The volunteers are paying their own way and expenses during their stay in Arizona. An overwhelming response has come in with over 2000 volunteers making the commitment to help.

On April 1, approximately 450 showed up to start their patrols. Gilchrist isn’t worried about the small turnout as he says more will be coming in during the month.

The volunteers have been screened, and a very strict code of ethics placed upon them. Their job will be to report to the Border Patrol any illegals they see coming across the border. They will have absolutely no confrontations with the illegals, just to report their arrival to Border Patrol.

Some of the volunteers will be armed with handguns, but will be in strict compliance with State and Federal laws. No rifles are allowed and the handguns carried will be for self defense only.

Resistance to the Minute Man Project is numerous, including the US government, with Bush going as far as calling them vigilantes. The Border Patrol has also deemed their presence unwelcomed.

Mexico’s President Fox also condemned any citizen group that would dare to "defy" his political goal of open borders, ignoring U.S. Immigration laws, 8 USC 1324, 1325 and 1326.

Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said Tuesday that Mexican consulates in Arizona would file criminal complaints against any illegal detentions of its citizens by volunteers of the so-called Minuteman Project.

A fierce gang known as Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, has issued orders to teach "a lesson" to the Minuteman volunteers. MS-13 is alleged to have 20,000 members nationwide and is believed to be the main source smuggling illegals across the border.

In Agua Prieta, members of the National Alliance for Human Rights, a loose-knit group organized by UC Riverside professor Armando Navarro, held a press conference to announce a rally Saturday to denounce the Minuteman Project.

The ACLU also plans to have teams in place to monitor any illegal interference with the illegals.

Various other groups plan to be on hand to protest the project.

The media will be in force to watch and report (Hopefully fairly) the progress going on.

It seems confrontations are unavoidable. This particular stretch of the border is well knows as a drug smuggling route, so the Zetas may also be involved.

On the Minute Man Project side, many of the volunteers are current (taking leave from their jobs) and former law enforcement officers as well as combat war vets.

In my opinion, these brave individuals are willing to risk it all to do a job the government won’t touch. They will be going against overwhelming opposition and I just pray that no one is killed.

Article. IV., Section. 4. of The Constitution States;

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

Would the illegal migration of thousands coming across the border monthly fall under Section 4 above? I believe that would be considered an invasion.

Yet, the President has refused to address the problem. It seems Vincent Fox of Mexico is making policy for the United States. In a recent summit, Mr. Fox, who has said he seeks an open border, has applied constant pressure on Mr. Bush to get the guest-worker program through Congress. Mr. Bush has pledged that he will do all he can.

Makes you wonder what his true agenda really is.

"Our vast intelligence enterprise will become more unified, coordinated and effective," Mr. Bush said. "It will enable us to better do our duty, which is to protect the American people."

The 563-page bill, which endured a tortured path to congressional passage, also aims to tighten borders and aviation security. The new law will establish a new director of national intelligence to supervise the nation's 15 military and civilian spy agencies, reports CBS News White House Correspondent Peter Maer.
Mr. Bush did not announce a candidate for that post at Friday's ceremony.

The MinuteMan Project is actively monitoring our border!

Stay tuned to this website for current information, photos, and media information. Due to the success of our project, we are swamped with media calls - one every few minutes. It is important that we respond to these queries - we are making every attempt to respond to all media requests. We are also updating the website with limited internet access. Therefore, updates will be somewhat terse. We apologize for this, but we are doing the best we can.
