about the Schiavo case , does it not seem strange that she had 3 or more broken bones when she had her stroke or heart attack , that a noble bell prize doctor was the only other doctor that spent time with her , and his report said she was aware and could improve. and the nurse that said she was aware and could swallow and the hospital fired her when she went to the police and about finding the empty insulin vile in the trash when she went into a hypoglycemia coma and there were three signed of a shot, one under the breast , under the arm and in her growing, and that it was after he won the law suit, and she was improving that he came up with she said she didn't want to live on tubes, I think along with 100 of thousands he caused this and he is afraid she will get better and tell what he did he has refused to let her have therapy and for them to take more movies, and also the girl friend that she was making plans with to leave him an get apartment with. he is another OJ and Scott Peterson

Terri Schiavo case symbolizes two threats to women

BY MARY SANCHEZ

Knight Ridder Newspapers

(KRT) - Tragic is an appropriate word for the Terri Schiavo story.

First, the tragedy of a young woman's life disrupted.

Then, there is the tragedy of a family's ordeal laid open to public scrutiny.

Schiavo was 26 years old when her heart stopped, cutting off oxygen to her brain. Since that day in 1990, her life has been analyzed by newscasts and newspaper stories detailing the dueling positions of family members.

A recent court ruling restarted the media coverage. Schiavo's parents are fighting to keep her alive. Her husband wants to stop feeding her intravenously. With each position stated in numerous court documents, the general public has gathered, taking positions on both sides.

But another aspect of Schiavo's story is often overshadowed by the right-to-die debates: the issue of how she came to this physical state in the first place.

Why did Terri Schiavo's heart stop?

Schiavo's parents believe her condition might have been caused by abuse, perhaps even by her husband. Her husband has denied this and contends her heart likely stopped because of a potassium deficiency, possibly because of an undiagnosed eating disorder.

In representing both possibilities, Schiavo is symbolic of two great threats to women in America. More than 10 million women (and 1 million men) struggle with an eating disorder. And one in three women will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.

Between those two social problems, just about every woman in America is affected. Hardly a woman alive today has not at one point in her life worried unrealistically about her weight. And hardly a woman alive today has not feared that a man would hit or otherwise attack her. Neither fact is good news about the health and safety of women.

A recent news article brought out the irony of Schiavo's situation. An Associated Press article written from Schiavo's home state of Florida discussed the possibility of an eating disorder. The heart is a muscle and when the body is starved of nutrients, the heart is among the organs affected. Now a court may very well rule her feeding tube can be removed, which would likely result in Schiavo starving to death.

That's a cruel twist if Schiavo began her own deterioration through an eating disorder.

Some family members have reacted bitterly to that explanation. They point to a bone scan taken a year after Schiavo's heart stopped. A report on the scan, available online through the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation, reveals broken bones. The doctor's report also states Schiavo had a history of trauma. And yet, her husband in 1992 won a $1.2 million medical malpractice lawsuit on the claim that her heart stopped because of the potassium imbalance.

Strangers can certainly hold their own opinions on euthanasia and right-to-die cases. But no one has the right to decide who of Schiavo's family loves her more: those who pray for a miraculous recovery or those who want an end to her suffering.

Women would be better served by more attention to the other tragedies that Schiavo's story can represent:

One recent article on Schiavo quoted the president of the National Eating Disorders Association saying, "The face of eating disorders is your next-door neighbor's daughter or maybe your own."

The same statement could be made about victims of domestic abuse.

Thousands of women are in effect dying a little each day through either an eating disorder or domestic violence. The only person who knows the true cause of Terri Schiavo's condition is Terri Schiavo. And she can't tell us her story.

A more appropriate way to honor this young woman is to ponder the other lessons of her life.
