Florida Militia & State Troops
From the end of the Civil War to the end of the first World War, Florida began the process of transforming its militia into a modern military organization.

Spanish American War and After
In that last decade preceding the war, most of the arms and men needed to fuel the Cuban Revolution passed through Florida ports and on Florida trains. Hundreds of Floridians, mostly of Spanish-American descent, slipped into Cuba to help fight for that island’s independence from Spain. A major percentage of the money raised to pay for the revolution was raised in Florida. Finally, it was at a breakfast meeting in St. Augustine in 1896 that Jose Marti was declared provisional president of the Republic of Cuba. He was presented a flag made by local ladies, and departed for the embattled island with a shipload of arms and men. Even before the actual declaration of war, Florida’s companies of state troops were busily recruiting new members to bring their units up to authorized strength. The men of Florida were anxious to join the struggle in Cuba. It was not to be.
Mexican Border to World War
Although Florida’s regiment earned no honors and had no combat service as a unit, most Florida Guardsmen did. Far more than one half of all the 2,000 Florida Guardsmen mobilized in 1917 experienced combat service with other regiments and divisions.

==================
Mission of the National Guard
Robert Hawk
The Guard has a state mission, to provide military organizations trained and equipped to function when necessary in the protection of life and property, and in the preservation of peace, order, and the public safety, as directed by competent state authority.
The Guard has a federal mission, as reserve components of the Army and Air Force of the United States, to provide trained and qualified individuals available for federal service in time of war or national emergency, or at such other times as the national security may require augmentation of the United states Armed Forces.
The Florida Air National Guard, in addition to their state and federal missions, has an air sovereignty mission for the eastern seaboard of the United States. The mission involves the maintenance of F-15 fighters and crew on a twenty four alert status, armed and ready for immediate commitment to intercept unidentified aircraft in or approaching the airspace of the United States.
The State Adjutant General and his Headquarters has an additional federal mission to direct and coordinate the pre-attack planning and post-attack operations of all military forces (Army, Navy, AirForce) made available within the state, to support civil authorities engaged in providing for survival of people and continuity of government in a nuclear environment.
The Army National Guard has a dual mission. The first, or federal mission, is to support national objectives as a participant in the Total Army Force, by providing trained units available for active duty in time of war or national emergency. In this mission, the ARNG supports the Army’s war plans, and at times, augments the active forces. The second mission, or state mission, is to provide units that are organized, equipped, an trained to function efficiently at existing strength in the protection of life and property and to preserve peace, order, and public safety under competent orders of state authorities.
