The Financial Times on Thursday said a gang hacked into Sumitomo's computers last October and unsuccessfully tried to transfer the money electronically to 10 bank accounts round the world.
"There is an ongoing investigation into an attempted robbery at the London offices of Sumitomo, but we cannot comment further," said a spokeswoman for the National High Tech Crime Unit.
The Financial Times said the gang had tried to transfer 20 million pounds to Israel where a man had been arrested.
A spokesman for Sumitomo's parent company in Tokyo said the bank had not suffered any damage.
"There has been no damage and we have taken appropriate security measures," said Takashi Morita, a spokesman for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking.
