How to Avoid‘or Beat’Flu w/o Vaccine

Most of us won't be able to get a flu shot this year, since the U.S. will be getting only about half as much vaccine as usual and that will be reserved for the sick and the elderly.(vaccines are themselves very dangerous, see below)
There are however steps we can take to avoid getting the flu.
Researchers think that SARS did not spread to Japan because they are a nation of frequent hand washers. * Surprisingly, most viruses are spread by touch, not by coughing or sneezing. You should also eat well and get plenty of sleep in order to keep your immune system in good condition.
What else can you do? Exercise regularly. University of Illinois researchers found that four consecutive days of moderate exercise in mice after they were infected with flu protected them from dying, compared with mice that didn’t exercise. As soon as flu symptoms appeared, exercise was stopped so the mice could recover, but they had a milder version of the disease. Exercise worked best for the older mice.
Deborah Mackenzie writes in New Scientist that the yearly U.S. death toll from the flu varies from 17,000 to 51,000.

Bird Flu spreads Oct. 18, 2004

It has just been reported that there is a new strain of the ‘Bird Flu’ that is symptomless. Even the older strains kills very rapidly. Some estimates are as high as 75% mortality in adults, more in children.

Health experts have been dreading the day when the Asian bird flu virus mutates, allowing it to be spread from person to person, and not just between poultry and people. Now the World Health Organization says it suspects "human-to-human transmission" of bird flu occurred in northern Thailand. If this is confirmed, it will be the first case and will mean that the flu will undoubtedly spread rapidly throughout the world, just as SARS did.
A brother and sister in Thailand died of the disease and after visiting them in the hospital, their mother has also died. Their aunt is also ill. The WHO's Kumara Rai says, "We are still almost firm that there was no contacts with sick birds." However, until tests are done, it cannot be confirmed that the family died from bird flu and the tests take several days. WHO says they are "very much concerned, but we are awaiting the laboratory confirmation."
Avian influenza's lethal H5N1 strain has killed 28 people in Vietnam and Thailand this year, but so far, all of these victims caught the disease directly from poultry. In order to prevent its spread, 100 million chickens have been killed. WHO is afraid that H5N1 could mutate into a highly contagious form of killer flu. When asked if a confirmed viral link between the humans in Thailand would mark the first step in this mutation, Rai says, "I think so."
If you're worried about this year's flu season, feel free to join hands with your neighbours — but you must cleanse your hands.
Dr. Joseph Mercola says, http://www.mercola.com/blog  (sixth article down) For removing viruses from hands, washing with soap and water was most effective since some viruses are hardy and relatively resistant to disinfection. The least effective method of all: Alcohol-based, "waterless" hand wipes that only removed roughly 50 percent of bacteria from volunteer subjects' hands. Moreover, after only 10 seconds of hand washing, all washing agents, (except for hand wipes), eliminated 90 percent of bacteria.
One major caveat about this study: Researchers found anti-microbial agents were best at reducing bacteria during hand washing (although the use of non-bacterial soap and water alone were just as effective in ridding hands of one bacteria).
* Avoid Anti Bacterial Soaps
One word of caution is avoid using antibacterial soap http://www.mercola.com/2004/mar/20/antibacterial_soaps.htm  These soaps are completely unnecessary and could easily cause more harm than good. The antibacterial compounds found in most of these soaps sold are likely contributing to the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In my practice, I have found the best way to maintain the ultimate hygiene is by using the Clenzology Advanced Hygiene System. http://www.mercola.com/forms/clenzology.htm
This hygiene kit is simple to use and only takes a matter of minutes, which makes it ideal for families with young children.
Most importantly, the Clenzology soap is not antibacterial and it is capable of reaching the tens of thousands of germs on the backs and palms of hands, on fingers and under fingernails.

David A. Relman, associate professor of medicine at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif said,
The chance you're going to pick up a transmissible agent is directly related to the number of people you have close physical contact with,". "Even shaking hands with people increases your risk." Relman advises that people use an alcohol-based hand sanitizing gels, which do an effective job of reducing risk of exposure to the flu virus, especially when restroom facilities aren't readily available. (dip tips of fingers into gel for ten seconds to kill germs under nails ).
Public health professionals are already witnessing a number of odd circumstances surrounding the flu and the shortage of available vaccines. Dozens of people showed up at a flu-shot clinic in Fergus Falls, Minn., earlier this month where no vaccines were available. Rather than getting a shot in the arm, they were instead handed a can of chicken soup and a box of tissues.

But doctors believe there are more practical methods for dealing with this year's flu season. "It's common sense," says Dr. Patricia Clancy of Concord, N.H. "If you have a fever, don't go to work," she advises. "So many people go to work when they're sick." Clancy also advises people to remember basic good-health practices: "Practice good hygiene, get seven to eight hours of sleep a night, get good nutrition — five fruits and veggies a day — and regular exercise."
Practicing good hygiene goes beyond regular hand washing, Clancy said. Towels, toothpaste, cups and toothbrushes can all transmit the influenza virus. "My kids each have their own toothpaste and their own cup," she said. (It is also a good idea if one member of the household starts showing symptoms; keep their dishes and silverware separate from the rest of the family’s)

Stop Worrying About the Flu – Your Five Best Options Revealed
By Dr. Joseph Mercola Like diehard fans camping out overnight to be the first in line for concert tickets to their favorite performer, people are waiting in long lines hoping to get the flu vaccine. Yes, it's that time of year -- flu season and the media and the government have stirred the public into complete panic mode. Headlines flood newspapers reading, "Vaccine shortage leads public crisis" and on the hour radio broadcasts are bombarding the public with reports that the flu epidemic is coming and there aren't enough vaccines to fight it. Before You Run Out to Get the Flu Shot ... Do Your Homework (Type VACINE DANGERS into Google on Internet , if you don’t have a computer go to the library or a cyber-café you can also type in and look at some of the links given in blue on these papers). It's becoming increasingly difficult to separate facts from the hype created by the media and government officials. In order to make an informed decision of whether or not to get the flu shot, it is of utmost importance to do your homework. This involves doing thorough research of the safety issues surrounding the flu vaccination and then learning the preventative measures against getting the flu in the first place. http://www.mercola.com/forms/vaccine_teleconference.htm
Dr. Hugh Fudenberg, one of the world's leading immuno geneticists, states the chances of getting Alzheimer's disease is 10 times higher if an individual has five consecutive shots than if they have one, two or no shots. This is likely due to the thimerosol (a mercury-derived preservative) and aluminium content of the vaccine. Does the flu Vaccine Really Work? The flu vaccine can actually weaken the immune system and make you more predisposed to the illness. The flu vaccine, whether in the shot or nasal form, is worthless at best and should be avoided. Not only are they loaded with toxic chemicals including mercury http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/10/vaccine_pregnant.htm  and aluminium, but many people come down with the flu shortly after receiving the shot. This is because it actually weakens the immune system, making the person more predisposed to the illness.
5 Ways to Avoid the Flu Now that you know what harm vaccines can do, the following are some simple things you can do to avoid catching the flu.
1. Avoid Sugar (and alcoholic drinks) Since sugar works by breaking down the functions of the immune system, it is especially important to eliminate it from your diet in order to keep your immune system running strong and capable of fighting viruses such as the flu. (Sugar uses up the B Vitamins and feeds viruses and helps them multiply)
2. Get Enough Rest. Getting the proper amount of sleep will help build up your resistance against potential invaders. When your body becomes over fatigued, it's more difficult to fight the flu. If you are having problems with sleep please review my Guide to Better Sleeping.
3. Exercise. Exercise helps your immune system by improving circulation throughout your body. When the components of your immune system circulate properly, the immune system is better equipped to detect an illness before it gets a chance to spread.
4. Eat Garlic Regularly. Eating fresh garlic each day will help keep the flu at bay. The antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal components of garlic are destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic. Therefore it is best to eat fresh garlic, as garlic pills are virtually worthless.
5. Wash Your Hands.* Good hand washing will help decrease the likelihood of spreading viruses to your nose, mouth or other people. If your immune system is strong, it should be able to fight off the virus if it does enter your body, but washing your hands provides that extra barrier of protection. (Be sure to scrub under nails with a nail brush)*
What should you do if you do get the Flu? Please remember the ultimate treatment for the flu is proactive prevention. Eat the right foods, avoid the junk, get plenty of rest and stay emotionally balanced -- all presented in detail in my new book, TOTAL HEALTH Program -- http://www.mercola.com/forms/total_health_book.htm  and you and the flu symptoms will likely never meet. I guarantee that this, and not vaccines and pills, are the answer. I have spent over two decades developing my dietary program, and through my respected clinic it has proven to help tens of thousands of people build their immunity, overcome disease (most far more serious than the flu), optimize their weight and increase their energy.
In the book you'll learn about all the foods that will help you build your immune system and optimize your weight, and those you should avoid. To make an informed decision, first you'll need to do some research in order to weigh all reasonable options for you and your family. If you are interested in finding out more about the vaccine issue, I urge you to consider "The Danger of Vaccines, and How You Can Legally Avoid Them" audiotape featuring nationally renowned vaccine expert, Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, who discusses the real dangers of vaccines and how you can legally avoid them. http://www.mercola.com/forms/vaccine_teleconference.htm

Dangers You Need to Know About FluMist First, it is important to familiarize yourself with the side effects of FluMist, which include cough, runny nose/nasal congestion, irritability, headaches, chills, muscle aches and fever. Ironically, all of these symptoms bear striking similarities to the symptoms of the flu. In addition, research has shown an increased risk of Bell palsy following intranasal flu vaccination, according to the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS). The makers of the nasal flu vaccine in the study decided not to market it the following season due to the risk. According to GACVS, the greater risk of Bell palsy following immunization with this vaccine may have been due to specific vaccine components, or simply to use of the intranasal administration route. It is therefore possible that such complications of vaccine administration may also apply to other nasal vaccines. The new live-virus vaccine (FLUMIST), which is squirted up the nose, was licensed by the FDA in June 2003 for use in healthy individuals between the ages of five and 50. It is not recommended for pregnant women or those with asthma, chronic lung or heart disease; chronic underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney disorders; immune suppression or immune system problems; children or adolescents receiving aspirin therapy, anyone allergic to eggs; or those with a history of Guillain Barre syndrome. It should not be given simultaneously with other vaccines.FLUMIST's vaccine live virus is shed after vaccination so the vaccinated are advised to avoid close contact with immune-compromised individuals for at least 21 days. Some hospital personnel are asking those recently vaccinated with FLUMIST to avoid visiting patients in hospitals to prevent the risk of transmitting the vaccine strain virus to sick patients.

If you do get the flu, one of the most important and simple things you can do is to use liquid colloidal silver in your ears. A few drops in each ear several times a day, is more than likely to abort the flu reaction. It costs so little you really don't have much to lose. I can guarantee you that it is less toxic and more effective than any flu vaccine on the planet.)
Mist Opportunity
For some, FluMist, the nasal flu vaccine manufactured by Med Immune Vaccines, is a viable option. The vaccine is designed for use by healthy individuals aged 5 to 49.
But, warns Clancy, "It's a live virus. So it's not an option for high-risk people. And you have to avoid exposure to immuno
