The prevailing spin on the outing of Gannon/Guckert would lead the average observer to believe that Gannon/Guckert himself, and his acquisition of a White House press pass, is the scandal.
The prevailing spin on the outing of Gannon/Guckert would lead the average observer to believe that Gannon/Guckert himself, and his acquisition of a White House press pass, is the scandal. Consequently, by outing Gannon/Guckert, it only logically follows that the media is exposing the problem. Some observers are even shocked - yes, shocked - at this unfolding story.
If you scroll about half way down the main page of my web site, you will see a Washington Times newspaper scan. Previous visitors to my site would know that I have had that posted for quite some time.
I first became aware of the extreme carnality inside the beltway through a book written by former Nebraska State Senator and attorney John DeCamp. The name of the book is The Franklin Cover-up. John DeCamp was even a Republican, but what he uncovered was enough to impel him to leave that party and join the Libertarian Party.
What, exactly, did DeCamp uncover? The director of the Franklin Community Federal Credit Union based in Omaha, Nebraska was a man named Lawrence E. King. Lawrence E. King was a prominent Republican activist, whose meteoric rise in the party was marked by close contacts with the White House during the Reagan-Bush years and singing the National Anthem at both the 1984 and 1988 Republican National Conventions.
But something happened with the Franklin Community Credit Union. Some $40 million went missing into Iran-Contra linked enterprises and Mr. King's accounts. Mr. King even served a prison sentence for his part in the fraud. The scandal would not stop there, however. Rumors of photographs depicting unspeakable acts being found at the Franklin Credit Union began to circulate. One of Mr. King's associates was none other than Craig Spence. Young kids began coming forward and making allegations about some very deviant conduct involving some prominent people in political, media, business, and ecclesiastical orbit.
There was a $1,000,000 judgment against Lawrence King in a civil suit brought against him over allegations of these unspeakable acts. Ironically, the judge who ruled on the case, the Honorable Warren Urbom, had previously ruled against the plaintiff in a criminal case.
Where is Lawrence King these days? From what I have heard straight from some people close to the Franklin case, back out in Washington, D.C. Probably operating under a pseudonym like Gannon/Guckert. From Craig Spence, to Lawrence King, to Gannon/Guckert, lurid tales of clandestine operations to compromise and blackmail politicians is just par for the course. The real scandal, then, is not that Gannon/Guckert gained access to the White House press corps despite his other activities; it is that he most likely ended up there because of his other activities.
Gannon/Guckert is probably nothing but a small figure in a much worse aggregate scandal, and why the media decided to out Gannon/Guckert now is anybody's guess. My guess would be that the Gannon/Guckert outing is a clear message to some members of his Washington, D.C. clintele: "Stay in line, or you're next." In our nation's capitol, it isn't about who you impress, but who you undress and get on film. While American kids are dying in Iraq, remember why your Congressman seems indifferent to your passionate pleas: he is busy showing up to parties, and then "parties after the parties."
