Bob Graham, friend or foe?
By Bev Conover

May 18, 2003 - Those who want to see the truth about 9/11 come out are all a-twitter over Senator Bob Graham's claim that he has information damaging to the Bush administration.

Does he? Or will the Florida Democrat, who is seeking his party's presidential nomination, prove to be the man that saves George W. Bush's hide, thereby burying the questions of 'what did Bush know and when did he know it' for generations, if not forever?

Floridians may look upon Graham as having been a decent governor. What, though, do they really know about him? What do Americans everywhere really know about him?

He was chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) in the 107th Congress and a primary author of the USA PATRIOT (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) Act.

He has gotten good press since 1974 for his practice of working with his constituents for a day at such jobs as policeman, journalist, teacher, construction worker, factory worker, fisherman, busboy, garbage man, etc.

But how many know about the Graham family's connections and associations with the Central Intelligence Agency?

Bob Graham makes no secret of his long-standing friendship with Rep. Porter Goss (R-FL), a former CIA agent. Bob's half-brother, the late Philip Graham, who was the publisher of the Washington Post, was a graduate of the Army Intelligence School in Harrisburg, Pa.

It was Philip Graham who, under the tutelage of State Department Foreign Services operative and former OSS veteran Frank Wisner, directed the CIA's infiltration of the US media, code-named Operation Mockingbird.

"Wisner created the first 'information superhighway.' But this was the age of vacuum tubes, not computers, so he called it his 'Mighty Wurlitzer,'" wrote Daniel Brandt in "Journalism and the CIA: The Mighty Wurlitzer."

In her book, "Katherine the Great," author Deborah Davis wrote, "By the early 1950s, the CIA owned respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, CBS and other communication vehicles, plus stringers, four to six hundred in all."

Philip Graham, who ran the operation until his suicide in 1963, allegedly boasted that "you could get a journalist cheaper than a good call girl, for a couple of hundred dollars a month."

In 1982, the CIA admitted that reporters on its payroll acted as case officers.

Apparently following in her late husband's footsteps, in 1981, then Washington Post Company CEO Katherine Graham announced that her editors would "cooperate with the national security interests."

In a 1988 speech at CIA headquarters, Katherine Graham said, "We live in a dirty and dangerous world. There are some things the general public does not need to know and shouldn't. I believe democracy flourishes when the government can take legitimate steps to keep its secrets, and when the press can decide whether to print what it knows."

Where does Bob Graham fit into this picture? What is his relationship with the CIA, other than his friendship with Goss, family connections and having chaired the SSCI? He and Goss, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, co-chaired the joint House-Senate review of the events surround the 9/11 attacks.

Bottom line of that review: It was a massive failure of the intelligence services. This is something Graham has repeated over and over, in addition for his push for more "homeland security."

"I think Sept. 11 was a gigantic failure of a number of institutions in our society of which intelligence was one," he said, in a February 2002 interview with the Washington Diplomat, while he was serving as chairman of the SSCI. "But it would be unfair to put exclusive blame on the intelligence agencies," he added

In a May 7 article in the Washington Post, Graham said, "We all agree Saddam Hussein is an evil man, but he is not our greatest threat."

He accused Bush, while attacking Iraq, of not paying enough attention to homeland security. "I will make sure that homeland defense consists of more than just plastic wrap," he said in reference to the administration advising Americans to buy plastic sheeting and duct tape to create safe rooms.

Nowhere, though, has Graham raised the questions of what Bush and his administration knew before, during and after Sept. 11.

Graham is currently under fire from environmentalists for his lackluster response to Florida sugar growers that want pollution restrictions in the Everglades loosened.[[**see additional material about this at bottom]] According to the Miami Herald, Graham has received $61,000 in contributions to his presidential campaign and political action committee from Big Sugar:

"West Palm Beach-based Florida Crystals gave the $50,000 payment to the PAC, while Clewiston-based U.S. Sugar Corp. gave $5,000totaling more than one-fourth of the money raised by a committee Graham created to raise his political profile and assist with his successful constitutional amendment campaign last year to roll back portions of Jeb Bush's higher education agenda.

"Brothers Alfonso Fanjul Jr. and Andres Fanjul, whose family owns Florida Crystals, and the company's chief financial officer, Luis Fernandez, each gave $2,000 this year to Graham's presidential campaign," the Herald reported.

Graham is the founder and chairman of the Senate New Democrat Coalition. Three other Democratic presidential contenders also are members of the coalition: John Edwards, John Kerry and Joseph Lieberman. All four also are members of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), a.k.a New Democrats.

Will Marshall, the president of the Progressive Policy Institute, an offshoot of the DLC, also is a signatory to the ultra right-wing Project for the New American Century's "Second Statement on Post-War Iraq."

ALEX JONES INTERVIEWS GREG PALAST

You know, the water pirates are just amazing. And by the way, heres a great one for you. You know whos one of their big buddies is Jeb Bush out of Florida. He was behind the scenes to turn over to a company named Azurix, the fresh water that comes out of the Everglades. Which right now, anyone from any of these cities can take the fresh water from the Everglades without cost to consumers. At the moment, the water is being contaminated by sugar plantations big, big contributors to the Bush family and, by the way, to the Democratic Party. They are the biggest contributors to both parties in Florida. Isnt that interesting? And those guys who are destroying the water of the Everglades, rather than being told to clean up their act, which would cost them about $800 million. Instead, this company Azurix said, well you give us the water, well clean it up, as long as you let us resell it. Azurix was until a couple of months ago, a 100% owned subsidiary of Enron.
