Now you know why children get assigned SSN's at the hospitals
where they are born, so they can become "performance units"
on the federal debt as soon as they are eligible to start working,
usually around age 16. That Number, by the way, also subjects
them to all other federal municipal laws that were originally
enacted only for the District of Columbia.

What "state" are you in (can you hear me now)?

"I'm from Alabama, and here we can't count to two,"
admitted the church mouse.

"I still couldn't read after I graduated from high school,"
replied the choir master.

Sincerely yours,

Taxpayers can do more to help pay federal debt

You can send a little extra to government; Americans gave $664,911
to assist last year.

WASHINGTON -- President Bush wants to cut the federal deficit in half by 2009. That would slow the growth of the federal debt, which is at record levels. Here's a look at key questions and answers, and what's next in the process:

Question: What's the difference between the deficit and the debt?

Answer: In personal terms, the deficit is when you spent more than you made last year. The debt would be how much you owe on your mortgage, student loans, car loan and credit cards. In other words, it's the accumulation of all your years of deficit spending.

The deficit for fiscal year 2004 was $412 billion, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, and is projected to be more than $400 billion in the coming year. The debt is $7.6 trillion. Of that, $3.2 trillion is owed by one part of the government to another and $4.4 trillion is owed to the public through
federal securities.

Q: What's so bad about the nation being in debt? How could it affect me?

A: The more the federal government has to pay in interest on the debt -- already one of the largest items in the budget -- the fewer dollars available for other things like roads, schools and health care. Deficits can also lead to higher interest rates.

Q: If every man, woman and child in America was told to pay to help get the nation out of debt, how much would my bill be?

A: Roughly $25,800.

Q: Where can I send my check?

A: Make the check payable to the "Bureau of the Public Debt." In the memo section of the check, make sure you write "Gift to reduce the Debt Held by the Public." Mail the check to:

Attn: Dept. G
Bureau of the Public Debt
P.O. Box 2188
Parkersburg, W.Va. 26106-2188

Q: Does anybody ever do that?

A: Yes, believe it or not. The government received $664,911 in debt-reduction gifts last year. Most checks sent are for amounts of less than $100.

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

No government can give anything to anybody without first taking it
from someone else ! Government is, by its very nature, legalized
taking. A limited amount of government is a necessary burden for
national defense and internal order. Anything else is a crime against
Freedom and Liberty !
