Truth to Power Hour
We will be joined by Ray Ybarra and Diana Bustamante. Ray is a fellow with the national ACLU Racial Justice Project and organized Arizona's anti-Minutman Project. Diana holds a Ph.D. in sociology. She is an assistant professor of sociology at New Mexico State University. and currently the executive director of Colonias Development Council. Ray is a fellow with the national ACLU Racial Justice Project and organized Arizona's anti-Minutman Project in April. Every day during the month of April 2005, Ray and volunteers from all around the state (and sometimes from outside the state!) monitored the Minutemen in the Douglas desert to ensure that they were not violating civil rights and liberties of Latino people. During that month, we all saw who the Minutemen really are - protectionist, racist, and increasingly militarized and militant. The Minutemen are not the friendly white guys in lawn chairs that the media protrayed in April - they are camoflauge-wearing, gun-toting xenophobes who want to "cleanse" the country of all people brown. Growing up in a migrant farmworker family, Diana Bustamante learned firsthand what it is like to live on the outskirts of the American Dream – and still achieve it. She worked in the fields through high school, then as a cashier and bookkeeper, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in sociology. In 1988, she accepted a position as assistant professor of sociology at New Mexico State University. In 1997, she became the executive director of Colonias Development Council. The Doña Ana County Colonias Development Council (CDC) is a council of grassroots community organizations. The Colonias Development Council organizes in 9 colonia communities: Salem, El Milagro, Rincón, Rodey, Mesquite, Las Palmeras, Montana Vista, Chaparral, and Columbus. The Colonias Development Council works in five areas: Community Development, Community Economic Development, Immigration and Civil Rights, Environmental Justice, and Youth Organizing. The mission of the Colonias Development Council is to improve the quality of life in the colonia-designated communities of southern New Mexico. The Colonias Development Council recognizes that the life of a community depends on the resources and talents of its residents. Through non-partisan political education, the promotion of health and well-being and the fostering of unity and harmony, the Colonias Development Council works to build community organizations, develop the infrastructure of the colonias and promote community economic development. www.minutemanhq.com this is the official Minutemen website. You can see how crazy they are here. www.swarmtheminutemen.com this is a progressive website that keeps people informed about the Minutemen Project and how to fight it . www.minuteman-hq.com this is the spoof Minutemen website. You can see how rational people make fun of and expose the Minutemen here. It's pretty funny. www.splcenter.org this is the Southern Poverty Law Center website. They have done the best job of anyone in the country exposing the Minuteman Project's ties to white supremacism and neo-Nazi groups in this country. See http://www.splcenter.org/intel/news/item.jsp?aid=13 and http://www.splcenter.org/center/splcreport/article.jsp?aid=150 www.sandiego.indymedia.org this is the San Diego Indymedia website. They are up on all that's happening in California right now as the Minutemen are preparing to start their "patrols" there in October. www.arizona.indymedia.org is the Arizona Indymedia website. They have coverage of the Minuteman Project when it was in Arizona during April 2005.
