DEPLETED URANIUM
Educational Project on the Topic of Depleted Uranium
Beginning January 1, 2004, Info-Mission launched an
educational project to support the movement to abolish the
manufacture and use of depleted uranium weaponry.
Over this past year, we have visited many campuses and
organizations with our presentation and learned that few
Americans had ever heard of depleted uranium. However, it
has been encouraging the support and pro action plans that
many of our lecture attendees have now initiated
independently.
Contact our office so that we may arrange for a lecture or
photo exhibition to visit your community.
ACTIONS
WORKSHOP ON DEPLETED URANIUM
This presentation on the topic of Depleted Uranium consists
of several components:
Introduction- I talk briefly about Info-Mission, our human
rights work and goals with Depleted Uranium Campaign. I
describe the outline for a 1-hour presentation.
1. A 20 minute overview to educate the audience about DU,
what it is, where it's used, why the military prefers DU,
and movements/ strategies toward action to abolish its use.
I discuss the science and environmental implications of
Depleted Uranium, the work developed at the Uranium Weapons
Conferences in Europe and aspects of International Law. In
addition, we discuss HR 2410, Congressman McDermott's bill
to initiate an investigative study that examines the effects
of DU on soldiers, Iraqi civilians and the environment. The
topic of gulf war syndrome is explored and what DU exposure
means for troops currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
2. We watch a 15-minute video called "DU - Silent Genocide,"
a 2003 release by the Japanese organization "No DU Hiroshima
project." Filmed in Iraq 2 years ago, it covers visits to
contaminated areas where DU has been exploded, footage of
Baghdad being bombed and the examination of radioactive
sites, contaminated soldiers, interviews with
individuals/children suffering from DU contamination,
interviews with doctors, and a visit to the Basra pediatric
hospital with an interview of Dr. Jenin Hassan.
3. A discussion follows that focuses on action plans to
support our troops and lobby local legislators to co-sponsor
anti DU efforts.
4. A 10-piece photo exhibit of Iraqi children suffering from
DU contamination and related bombing sites is provided as an
aid to understanding everyday realities of war for the Iraqi
people. These black and white photos tell a compelling story
of the current humanitarian crisis caused by DU
contamination. Also offered are DU booklets, brochures and
related materials for further research.
5. Questions/Answers - As I explain in the beginning, I
speak as a non-expert, I am educated on the topic, but
sometimes cannot answer questions that require a scientific
analysis. In which case, I bring a variety of printed
materials for the audience to reference for accurate and
updated information on DU. We also provide a well-researched
resource list to utilize various organizations and
scientists working on this issue.
Info-Mission offers the workshop presentation for a 100$
donation and applies all funds collected to convert and
distribute our DU mobile exhibition to libraries,
organizations and universities.
