William A. Pauwels, Sr.I do not necessarily agree with everything I circulateMon May 5 16:04:18 2003208.152.73.208Dear Sister Joan,I suppose it would have been good if the "Founding Women" had had some input. [Some actually did. Read "John Adams" by David McCullough (sp?) to see how much influence Abigail Adams had. Excellent book!] But then, they might have given us Political Correctness, Roe vs Wade, Extreme Environmentalism, Extortionary Tax Rates, Altruism, etc. as part of the Bill of Rights. [Imagine how many abortions would have been performed if Roe had been the law for the past 200 years!]Perhaps the Holy Spirit knew what He was doing when He gave the Ten Commandments to a man, when He made Jesus a man, when He selected Apostles who were men, when He inspired men to found the U.S.A. as a Democratic Republic, when He made the Rule of Law . . . under Judeo-Christian Values . . . our guiding principle. The Founding Fathers were way ahead of their time . . . and America was way ahead of any other society or country in the establishment of a Democratic Republic. That doesn't mean the Founders were perfect or infallible. They certainly were not. Like most of us, they were flawed men. But in the context of their time, place, culture and tradition . . . they were incredible men . . . and gave us a foundation that has stood up pretty well as we have evolved these past 227 years. The English and European elites said it wouldn't last. How wrong they were as American Liberty, Capitalism, Constitutional Rule-of-Law, Separation of Powers, and Individuality forged the greatest civilization, with the highest standard of living and the least poverty, in world history.*******Please understand that I do not necessarily agree with everything I circulate. I usually think it thought provoking. I circulate to a group who enjoy thinking about different ideas. As you know, MOST people spend there entire life trying to confirm that what they believe to be true is, in fact, the way it is. That's why, for instance, many people continue to vote for the Democrats . . . even after the party has abandoned the principles that FDR and John Kennedy advocated.A FEW of us like to consider contrarian ideas. For example, I read "Capitalism, The Unknown Ideal" by Ayn Rand many years ago, when I found myself . . . guided by my ingrained Catholic Altruistic Ideals . . . in frequent disagreement with people who were citing Rand's philosophy. In the process, I found I agreed with much of what she had to say . . . but, of course, not her Atheism and strong anti-Altruistic positions.Over the years, I moved from being a supporter of John Kennedy to being a supporter of Compassionate Conservatism. Like Ronald Reagan used to say, "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, it left me." The Dems are now, sadly, a collection of liberal/socialist/neo-communist/one-world misfits supported by under-informed, conservative folks suffering from guilt or clinging to outdated party allegiances.Let me explain: I'm firmly convinced most Americans live compassionately-conservative life-styles . . . even those who claim to be liberal and who support liberal causes and politicians.Actions speak louder than words, and when you examine how they live, you find most people live conservatively. They go to work every day, they pay their own way, they give birth to their children, they educate their children, they care for their elderly parents and relatives, they support their government, they pay their taxes, they believe in the Judeo-Christian Values our country was founded upon, they are patriotic, they contribute to their churches and local charities, they hate perversion, etc. Many Americans suffer from a false sense of guilt because they feel unworthy to have it so good. By supporting liberal politicians, they try to alleviate that guilt. And, of course, the really poor support liberals because liberals promise to take care of them with other people's money, which in fact they rarely do because most people are really conservative in practice and won't pay for the implementation of liberalism. (That's why all Socialistic regimes must use guns to implement their schemes.)The good old American Way, Free-Enterprise, has dealt with this reality better than all of the advocates of Socialism, Communism, etc. It has helped the poor and everyone else . . . by putting people to work . . . by keeping our Free-Enterpriseeconomy moving forward . . . by eliminating the something-for-nothing incentives that undermine other economic system. [Sooooo . . . we've got to keep remindingpeople of this. The elite media aren't doing it.]*********Well enough of this palaver. I hope I haven't bored you. The world of ideas is so interesting . . . so exciting . . . once you consider, really consider, other perspectives! :-))All the best!BillWilliam A.
