The Mom Speaks Out!

Mother of the 14 year old boy who was brutally beaten and severly injured in a racial hate crime attack!
Rebekah sent to this to me via e-mail and asked me to publish it. After reading this, people of good will should come to our "Rally Against Violence" on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 12:00 Noon in front of Kingston High School, 420 Boradway, Kingston, NY

Letter To The Public
From Rebekah Hedrick
Mother of 14 year old student who was violently beaten
at Kingston, NY High School, during school hours

We were just like any other ordinary family until Oct.7
05, as a matter fact one might have called me liberal.

I even worked diligently on the Kerry campaign. What
happened to my son was something that a parent cannot

While walking past a gang of black kids on the lower
wall of his High School my son and his friends were
called to, made fun of and called a racial slur
by this gang.

The attack commenced from behind. A 300 pound kid
weighing 2 and a half times my sons weight struck by
spinning him around and holding his hair, punching
with such force that it broke three bones in his face!

His orbital bone floor fractured leaving a large hole
between his eye and sinus cavity.

A friend of my sons tried to stop the attack and he
did he was punched, kicked and stomped into the ground
by what some say was three but some accounts state two
large black children.

No security guards were present to stop the assault,
the KPD were the only ones that responded. My son has
been in and out of hospitals, to every specialist
imaginable has had more surgery and still has vision

After my son was hurt another mother called me to tell
of her horror story in the district which landed
her son in the hospital with stitches in his head in
the Kingston summer school program.

This beating also had been given to a white boy by a
gang of blacks yet nothing was done. On Oct. 31st
another boy was beaten by a gang of blacks , he landed
in the hospital with a broken nose. His mother states
this was indeed racial.

The school sent me and the family of the boy in our
attack a faux incident report stating these incidents
were on Broadway not on campus. Many witnesses say it
was right on the driveway of the High School!

Now lets get this straight, 4 white boys beaten by
gangs of blacks in the last 3 months..this is not
racial? What is it then?

If the shoe were on the other foot it would be called
as such?

I did not know who Hal turner was until a contact of
his contacted me urging me to call in and tell my
story. He was outraged at what had taken place. All I
wanted was a rally to protest this kind of violence,
bring attention to the double standard and the fact
that hate crimes should be applied equally.

Now, there are counter-protesters coming to the rally
to preach tolerance. Where were the tolerance
protesters to teach tolerance to the attackers before
these boys were beaten? Where are the tolerance
protesters when these kids are constantly being
harassed for money??

Do these beatings of white kids add so little to the
equation of tolerance that they are denied their

What was I supposed to do, leave this to the same
people that allowed this to happen to these boys?

Hal Turner may not be the right messenger but he was
the only one that would listen. No one, no one at all
wanted to use the word racial. I did not want to use it

It became more apparent to me as I talked with more and
more people that had experiences such as mine. We have
become paralyzed by this word when it is used to
defend a white person.

Many white parents are afraid. Many of them are
outraged at what is going on but many are too afraid to
speak up. Many have just given up and taken their
children out of this school!

Once we admit there are racial inequalities pertaining
to attacks on whites we can allow them the same rights
as all others.

Why is it so hard for people to admit we have a
racial problem? If we admit it we can work on it.

I’m not a racist or anti-Semitic. I ask for people to
please take a look at what is happening here.

Equal justice for all.

Rebekah Hedrick
