The United States justified the conquest of Iraq on the claim that Saddam Hussein was in defiance of the United Nations. In hindsight, Saddam wasn't; he really had gotten rid of his weapons of mass destruction. So now here is Israel (which really does have weapons of mass destruction) openly boasting of its defiance of the United Nations. And here is George Bush abandoning America's decades-long role of neutral arbiter and moral light of the world to stand next to the criminal Sharon. White House-AP -- The Bush administration is denouncing an international court's ruling that Israel is violating the law by building a security barrier in the West Bank.White House spokesman Scott McClellan says it's a political issue and should be resolved through a political agreement -- not the International Court of Justice.Of the 15 judges, the only one to vote in favor of Israel was the American judge.Meanwhile, Israel isn't showing signs of complying with the ruling. An Israeli legal adviser insists the barrier is needed to protect Israelis from Palestinian attacks. Daniel Taub says "as long as terror continues, Israel will have no choice but to defend its citizens."The court, however, has rejected Israel's contention that the 425-mile long fence is needed for security purposes.The ruling by the international court isn't binding but it holds heavy political weight.Copyright 2004 Associated Press.
