Where is the accountability?
Where is the accountability?
To the editor:
For the past two weeks wherever I went in Melrose, from the supermarket to Dunkin’ Donuts, to CVS, to the YMCA or wherever people were gathered, the overriding topic of conversation focused upon the unfortunate boy who was viciously attacked by a young adult while attending a party at a home on the Lynn Fells Parkway the week after Christmas.
The victim of this unprovoked attack was rendered unconscious, suffered multiple injuries, including a lacerated scull, vision impairment and memory loss. It is my understanding, and apparently common knowledge, that the party was attended by dozens of underage drinkers while the owners of the home (parents of the hosts) were out of state.
There is no question that multiple calls were made to 911 in the seconds and minutes after the attack; the Melrose Police Department, Fire Department and ambulance all responded to the scene. The victim was stabilized and transported, via ambulance, to the Melrose Wakefield Hospital and later to Children’s Hospital.
Given the severity of this crime and the level of attention that this incident has attracted, it is astonishing to me that absolutely not one word of this incident has been printed in this newspaper. Should this newspaper have reported the facts of this incident and detailed the horrific injuries sustained by this victim? Is this not the very type of incident that we, as citizens and parents, should be aware of and about which we should be deeply concerned? Why has this incident been ignored? When warranted we, as parents, have to accept responsibility for our children’s actions. Should the parents and owners of the home have left their teenage children alone thereby enabling them to host an underage drinking party? I don’t know the answer to that question, however, they did just that. Unfortunately for them and, more importantly, the poor boy that was violently attacked, the consequences of their decision and the decisions of their children, were catastrophic.
I believe that we, as parents in this community, need to get our collective head out of the sand! The time is long overdue for parents, to stop saying “That’s not my child!” All parents must recognize that there are serious substance abuse problems within our teenage community — with our children! The longer we cover up the mess that our children make; the longer we lie for them and sweep things under the rug, the longer they will continue to destroy their lives and those lives of the people around them. Our children must be made to understand that they should be and will be held responsible for their actions. As with all things, this must begin with parents, but in this larger goal, we must all work together: parents, teachers, coaches, politicians and police. It is time for all involved to be held accountable. Our children are counting on us.
